Join me as I, Sarah Greene Reed, cook my way through my mother’s amazing recipe collection. My mom, Dale Volberg Reed, was the best hostess I know. A seasoned cook and food writer, she was fearless in the kitchen and would attack any cuisine with gusto! I have fond (well, maybe that’s not the word) memories of rolling endless grape leaves and filo dough pastries for a Middle Eastern inspired engagement party for my uncle when I was about 7. Mom sent me off to college with 3 boxes of cooking gear including a double boiler and the Silver Palate Cookbook inscribed “Remember, chevre is GOAT CHEESE!”. We hate goat cheese. Mom died rather unexpectedly in 2018. My father recently unearthed her volumes of perfectly indexed recipes and sent them to me. With COVID I’ve certainly been cooking a lot. However, even before being stuck at home, I started taking more pride and care with my food. (I enjoy posting smug Instagram photos of my concoctions.) I’ve been looking for a new project and when I saw all of the work my mom had put into cataloguing her recipes, I knew they needed to be shared with the world!
